Axl Rose opened up about his battle with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder during Guns N’ Roses’ concert at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The 64-year-old frontman said he recently underwent a procedure for the condition, which has left part of his mouth numb.

During the band’s August 12 show, Rose discussed how the condition has affected his singing and caused jaw discomfort. He narrated, as per Asbury Park Press, “I had a really crazy TMJ. When I’m singing, it’s kind of like somebody’s in my ear, like Big Bunny is eating a carrot and celery in my ear, and it’s popping around. I had to do a tube. I had that done a couple of days ago. So now, this side of my mouth (his left side) is still numb… it gets interesting. It’s challenging.”
Rose explained that dealing with TMJ is particularly challenging for him as a rock singer, reports Billboard. He also joked, “So you hear all these sounds while you’re singing, and you hear sounds that, like, make you go, ‘I really probably shouldn’t be doing what I’m doing, because that sound sounds like my jaw’s gonna fall off or go to the side or get stuck that way.”
Rose continued to joke about his experience with TMJ, saying he hears unusual sounds while singing. He said the noises sometimes make him feel as though his jaw could “fall off,” shift to the side, or get stuck. He jokingly added that such a situation would be “pretty funny.”
Despite his facial numbness, Rose performed several Guns N’ Roses hits during the band’s World Tour show at MetLife Stadium. They opened with Patience and Welcome to the Jungle. Rose took the stage alongside Guns N’ Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan, Dizzy Reed, Richard Fortus, and Isaac Carpenter. The band’s North American tour continues through September 19, and then they will perform in Australia and New Zealand.
