The upcoming content shake-up on Netflix is not only bringing a series of titles to the streaming platform but will also see the departure of several fan-favorite comedies, as well as a number of sports dramas. Among the boxing movies leaving Netflix in the coming days is a biographical boxing film that earned lead actor Denzel Washington his second Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
Denzel Washington’s The Hurricane is leaving Netflix
Netflix subscribers who like to watch real-life sports features will want to catch The Hurricane before it leaves the platform. The acclaimed movie will be parting ways with the streaming service next month, on September 1, 2026.
Led by Denzel Washington and directed by Norman Jewison, The Hurricane depicts the life of real-life boxer Rubin Carter, whose aspirations as a boxer are taken from him after he is wrongly convicted of a triple murder in a bar in Paterson, New Jersey. Carter, along with another man, was sentenced to life in prison.
In addition to Denzel Washington as Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, the movie’s star-studded cast includes Vicellous Reon Shannon, Deborah Kara Unger, Liev Schreiber, John Hannah, Dan Hedaya, Debbi Morgan, Rod Steiger, and Clancy Brown, among others.
Released in 1999, The Hurricane ended its theatrical run at the box office with a worldwide collection of just under $74 million, as per Box Office Mojo. The film was generally praised by critics and audiences alike. At the time of writing, The Hurricane holds an 82% Tomatometer rating and an 87% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to his nomination for Best Actor at the Oscars, Washington was also nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role category at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and won a Golden Globe award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama for his performance in the film.
