More than 15 years after its theatrical release, Law Abiding Citizen is once again drawing a strong reaction from viewers. The Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx thriller has secured a spot among Netflix’s most-watched movies in the United States. Its recent performance has also seen it rank above several well-known movies on the platform.
Gerard Butler’s Law Abiding Citizen finds new audience on Netflix
Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx’s Law Abiding Citizen is gaining renewed attention on Netflix. According to FlixPatrol, the action thriller ranked No. 8 on Netflix’s Top 10 movies in the United States on August 12, 2026. It has also moved ahead of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and A Toxic Love Story on the streaming chart.
Directed by F. Gary Gray and written by Kurt Wimmer, Law Abiding Citizen was released in theaters on October 16, 2009. The film follows Clyde Shelton, whose wife and daughter are murdered during a home invasion. When prosecutor Nick Rice makes a deal with one of the killers in exchange for testimony against the other, Shelton becomes convinced that the justice system has failed his family.
Ten years later, the men responsible die suspicious and gruesome deaths, leading Rice to suspect Shelton. However, Shelton’s revenge soon expands beyond those directly responsible for his family’s death, forcing Rice to confront him and his plans against the system.
Butler stars as Clyde Shelton, while Foxx plays Nick Rice. The film’s cast also includes Bruce McGill as Jonas Cantrell, Colm Meaney as Detective Dunnigan, Leslie Bibb as Sarah Lowell, and Regina Hall as Kelly Rice, among others.
Law Abiding Citizen received a poor response from critics when it was released. The film currently holds a 26 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 161 reviews. On the other hand, its audience score is considerably higher at 75 percent.
