Kelly Ripa Reveals Surprising Cause of Painful Gum Surgery & Live Absence

Kelly Ripa has opened up about the gum surgery that forced her to step away from Live with Kelly and Mark. She also revealed the everyday habit that caused the problem.

The Marvin’s Room actress and talk show host discussed the procedure with Michelle Buteau on her Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast. The episode was recorded before Ripa had the surgery.

How Kelly Ripa discovered the problem that required surgery

During the podcast, Ripa explained that her dentist found gum recession caused by years of brushing her teeth too much. She had actually been advised to have the procedure five years ago, but delayed it until her doctor told her she could not wait any longer.

She told Buteau, “I’m an over-brusher. I brush my teeth too much. It’s a good-bad habit. But I’ve caused gum recession down here specifically, and so they have gotta re-gum my gums.”

The procedure involves taking tissue from the roof of the mouth and placing it over the affected gums. Ripa said she would not be allowed to talk for 10 days after the surgery.

Buteau, 49, said the surgery “sounds painful.” Ripa agreed and replied, “It is,” before explaining the recovery rules. She also revealed delaying the procedure. Her doctor eventually told her she could not put it off any longer.

The recovery also meant missing several Live tapings. Mark Consuelos previously told viewers that Ripa was recovering at home and could not speak. Several guest hosts filled in during her absence.

Ripa later shared her concern about staying quiet during recovery. “We’re already managing my stress level for not being able to talk for ten days.”

For those who don’t know, a gum graft is commonly used to treat gum recession and protect exposed tooth roots. It can also help reduce tooth sensitivity and protect the gums from further damage.
