Democratic Party members are pointing fingers at Donald Trump for the personalized 18-karat gold ring he received as a gift from Belgium. Two Democrat senators have penned a note to question the legitimacy of the present after the president’s administration provided a massive tariff exemption to Belgium’s diamond industry.

In July 2026, the head of Belgium’s diamond industry bestowed upon Donald Trump an expensive ring with 321 diamonds that commemorated the 80-year-old politician’s two terms in office. Coincidentally, the Trump administration provided the Belgian diamond industry with a billion-dollar tariff exemption just a few weeks after the exchange.
Democrats have countered this interaction by describing the ring as a “cartoonish bribe.” Senators Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal recently composed a letter to the Belgian diamond industry’s primary trade organization and the jeweler who designed the ring, wherein they issued a warning under the US federal bribery law.
“We have previously raised concerns about the President’s record of doling out special treatment to CEOs who are able to woo him with flattery, payoffs, or both,” the letter read, as per MS NOW. “Your actions could also raise serious legal questions under federal criminal law.”
The gold ring, valued between $25,000 and $35,000, features 321 diamonds, 56 sapphires, 13 emeralds, and six rubies. The surface of the watch-sized ornament also includes a gem-infused presidential seal, along with diamond-studded ‘T’ emblems on its sides. Finally, the ring highlights numbers 45 and 47 inside a Superman-style logo to honor Donald Trump’s two presidential terms.
Explaining the debated tax exemption, White House spokesperson Kush Desai noted, “The Trump administration agreed to provide preferential tariff treatment for diamonds as part of our historic trade deal with the European Union that was signed last summer. The exemption of diamonds in the Forced Labor Section 301 tariffs reflects how the Administration continues upholding our end of the deal.” He further stated that “the only special interest guiding the Trump administration’s decision-making is the best interest of the American people.”
