Alan Ritchson admits Season 3’s success left him “stressed out” about topping Reacher‘s biggest fight yet. The star and showrunner explained why Season 4 takes the action in a completely different direction.
Alan Ritchson details what will make Reacher Season 4 a good experience
Reacher Season 3 pitted Alan Ritchson against Olivier Richters’ Paulie, a 7’2″, 400-pound opponent. Ritchson spent three weeks filming that climactic fight alone. Speaking to Collider during a set visit, Ritchson acknowledged the pressure that success created. “I was so stressed out after we did well in Season 3,” he said. “Now, how do we top that? It’s impossible. We set the bar so high.”
Showrunner Nick Santora offered a direct answer to that pressure. “We can’t try to beat ourselves every time. We just have to continue to be different,” Ritchson shared. Executive producer and director Sam Hill echoed that approach. “I think it’s more about different,” Hill explained. He described each season as a new world built around a consistent character.
Rather than finding someone even larger, Season 4 changes the equation entirely. Some of Reacher’s opponents this time are much smaller than him. Ritchson admitted that sounds like it should make things easier. “You throw in something that’s really challenging where Reacher’s now fighting somebody half the size,” he said. “You quickly realize, he’s met his match in a very different way.”
Agnez Mo joins the cast as Lila Hoth, bringing Southeast Asian martial arts into the fight choreography. She incorporated traditional Indonesian dance into her character’s movement style. “It’s not just karambit; it has a little dance to it,” Mo explained. “There’s femininity. There’s this pretty picture while killing you, basically.”
Stunt coordinator Buster Reeves confirmed the shift required rethinking the physical language entirely. The team experimented with different fighting styles to match the new tone. Ritchson also revealed production shot more fights in the first three weeks than all previous seasons combined. Reeves recalled his reaction after reading the scripts. “In the first four episodes, we had 11 choreographed, pre-vis, everybody-has-to-learn-their-section fights,” he said.
