David Tennant’s Doctor Who return rumor just hit an unexpected snag
Rumors about David Tennant returning to Doctor Who hit a complication tied to the show’s ongoing production crisis. According to The Times, Dean Devlin’s company Electric Entertainment is in talks with the BBC about producing a new series. The report also states that a production company approached Tennant to reprise his role as the Time Lord.
However, the BBC’s tender process for a new production partner remains in its early stages. Former showrunner Chris Chibnall highlighted the financial reality behind the show’s uncertain future. “The big story is, look, this is a BBC that cannot afford to make shows that it wants to make,” Chibnall said in an interview with WHO Corner to Corner.
Chibnall also addressed the broader funding challenges facing the broadcaster. “Any discussion around it is about money more than anything else, and I think that that’s been missed a little in the discourse,” he explained. He added that the BBC’s financial constraints stem from reduced funding agreements over the past 15 years.
Devlin produced and co-wrote blockbuster films including Stargate, Independence Day and Godzilla. His television credits through Electric Entertainment include Leverage, The Ark and The Librarians. The report suggests reinstating Tennant could help revive the long-running sci-fi series.
Disney+ ended its deal with the BBC following Russell T Davies’ second revival, leaving the show shelved. Tennant, 55, last appeared as the Doctor in 2023 special episodes marking the show’s 60th anniversary. He currently stars as Lord Baddingham in the second season of Rivals on Disney+.
