A woman says she feels “traumatized” after officers pulled her over two times in the same week due to a Flock camera error. Last week, we reported that multiple police cars from Brookfield had stopped a silver SUV, halting traffic on I-94, and drew guns on the driver, who got out of the car and put her arms up, but later realized that her car was flagged by mistake. Now the woman is speaking out and wants police to provide an explanation and issue an apology.
Police insists this isn’t a Flock camera issue
Amber Newell says she was frightened when Brookfield police surrounded her car, drew their guns, and ordered her to get out with her hands up.
“My momma is like my go-to-person, I wanted to call her so bad yesterday,” Newell told FOX6, “But if I’m like, if I make a sudden move, it’s gonna be over, it’s going to end my life.”
She continued, “It was very embarrassing because after they put us in cuffs, they walked us to the car, I don’t know what’s going on, I’m scared. All you see is people in they cars recording.”
After Newell was detained and arrested, Brookfield Police later realized that her vehicle was flagged incorrectly. The Milwaukee Police Department had placed the car in the Flock system in connection to a homicide, but personnel had forgotten to remove the alert.
Brookfield Police Chief Christopher Garcia says the officers’ action were “consistent” with the information available to them. Meanwhile, MPD maintained that this incident was caused not because of a Flock camera issue, but a data entry mistake.
However, that provides little comfort for Newell. She says that Milwaukee police had already pulled her over with guns drawn three days earlier on Monday, where officers towed her car but later let her go.
“I’m really mad at Milwaukee, MPD because y’all failed, y’all failed the system, y’all failed me, y’all failed everybody – I’m traumatized now,” Newell said.
“My daughter keep asking me, mama is the police going to get us?” she continued. “She doesn’t want to ride in the car no more because she don’t know if the police going to pull us over and do it again.”
