Friends Creator & June Diane Raphael’s New Prime Video TV Show Is Setting a Risky Record

Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman is working on a new Prime Video TV show. However, by experimenting with a new format, Kauffman is taking a significant creative risk.

The Friends co-creator has received the green light for her multi-camera sitcom, DINKS. The title stands for Dual Income No Kids. While the idea of improvised comedy might sound interesting on paper, it also runs the risk of things going awry during filming.

However, Kauffman appeared confident about the project. The 69-year-old said, per Variety, “I’ve always said I wouldn’t do another multi-cam unless someone was able to reinvent it. Okay Goodnight and I got tired of waiting, and decided we should do it ourselves. It’s what I hoped it would be: unique, hilarious and warm. Shooting this show is like being on a roller coaster in the dark. You have no idea where it’s going to go, but you know it’s going to be fun.”

Starring June Diane Raphael and Paul Scheer, the series is being billed as an improvised multi-camera comedy. The production of the show also features a unique partnership. Amazon MGM, Publicis Media Content Innovation (PMCI), and Lionsgate have partnered to produce and finance the project.

Marta Kauffman’s TV legacy, from Friends to Grace and Frankie

Kauffman is widely regarded as one of television’s most influential sitcom creators in history. One of her best projects is Friends, which she co-created with David Crane. While the first season dropped back in 1994, the show’s popularity helped it run for 10 seasons on NBC through 2004. Friends went on to become a massive hit and remains one of the best TV shows ever made.

Kauffman once again made headlines with her recent Netflix comedy series, Grace and Frankie, which also features June Diane Raphael. Receiving a warm reception from audiences, the comedy series ran for seven seasons, becoming one of Netflix’s longest-running shows to date. Interestingly, both Raphael and Scheer previously worked with Kauffman on Grace and Frankie.
