House of the Dragon Director Responds to George R.R. Martin’s Criticism of Book Changes

House of the Dragon director Nina Lopez-Corrado has responded to the changes made in HOTD Season 3. She addressed the criticism by George R.R. Martin as the co-creator distanced himself from the prequel.

Corrado told Entertainment Weekly, “We do deviate just a little bit in episode seven from what’s originally in the books. Personally, from a character standpoint, what Ryan [Condal, showrunner] and the writers did in terms of that really helped evolve the character storylines from what were in the books.”

Additionally, she said the writers and actors handled the season’s necessary changes effectively. Corrado said, “I know that’s a very controversial thing to say for diehards, but I think some of the storylines that you’re gonna see in [episode] seven that’ll carry on into eight were really executed strongly by the writers and also by the actors.”

However, Martin described the planned changes in Seasons 3 and 4 as “larger and more toxic” in a 2024 blog post.

Meanwhile, showrunner Ryan Condal called the criticism “disappointing,” saying the source material does not follow a straightforward narrative.

“George himself is a monument, a literary icon in addition to a personal hero of mine, and was heavily influential on me coming up as a writer. It’s this incomplete history, and it requires a lot of joining of the dots and a lot of invention as you go along the way,” Condal said.

According to The Independent, one change that drew attention involved Helaena Targaryen and her dragon, Dreamfyre. In Martin’s book Fire & Blood, Helaena is bonded to Dreamfyre. However, the series has largely kept her from riding the dragon. Season 3 features Helaena mounted on a dragon, which does not happen in the novel.

House of the Dragon is currently airing its third season. The finale episode is scheduled for next week.
