As if people need another reason not to answer their door for a stranger. A woman in Phoenix thought she was about to receive a package from Amazon, but she received a speeding ticket instead. Myranda Young shared footage of the encounter from her door’s camera on TikTok in a video that has since gone viral. She felt duped by the stranger who came to her door wearing a blue vest that looks similar to an Amazon delivery worker and was surprised that someone personally came to her residence just to deliver a citation.
Woman feels encounter was “scammy”
In late July, Young was notified by her roommate that there was supposedly an Amazon delivery worker that needed a signature from her. Young explains that both her and her roommate were not at their apartment at the time, so she answered through the camera’s speaker instead.
“I was under the impression that it was an Amazon delivery,” Young told Local 12.
She then asked the man whether she could provide a signature over the speaker. That’s when the stranger revealed who he really was.
“He then stated he was actually with the city of Phoenix,” she recalled, “and that he was there to let me know that I needed to pay for my speeding ticket.”
The process server went on to explain that Young should have received the citation in the mail due to her being caught speeding on a photo enforcement camera in the area. Since Young had identified herself as the recipient of the ticket, he left the paperwork she needed to sign at her doorstep.
Young later learned that in Arizona recipients don’t need to respond to traffic citations that are mailed, but that they become enforceable once they are served personally. That’s why he was there in the first place. However, she still thought that the whole situation felt “scammy.”
“I’ve never been served before,” she said, “but it was just a little off-putting for me that he was coming in a blue vest that was very similar to an Amazon delivery driver as opposed to maybe a vibrant yellow.”
