George Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, a human rights lawyer, have reportedly been forced to evacuate their multimillion-dollar estate in France. The move comes as devastating wildfires continue to sweep across parts of Europe.
The couple had been staying in the small town of Brignoles, located in France’s Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. They lived there with their nine-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella.
George and Amal Clooney pledged to support the Brignoles community amid fires
Informing their plans to evacuate their estate, the Clooneys sent a letter to Republican leader Didier Brémond, reports PEOPLE. The letter read, “Dear Didier, At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment.”
“As we evacuate Brignoles, we want to emphasise 2 things, first, we hope you and the people of our city are safe, and second, that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we’ll be part of making it whole.” The letter quoted the couple saying, “We love Brignoles and our friends who live there.”
The couple purchased Domaine du Canadel in August 2021 for a reported US$8.3 million, as per the report by News.com.au. Spanning 425 acres, it features an 18th-century home, a 25-acre vineyard and an olive grove. The couple reportedly chose the small Provençal town in southern France as a peaceful escape from public attention.
The evacuation comes as France continues battling one of its most severe wildfire outbreaks in recent years. According to the Associated Press, the wildfires in France have spread across an area roughly four times the size of Paris. In France, around 224,000 people were evacuated from the Gironde region.
The wildfire crisis also forced 3,000 residents to leave their homes in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. Spain also reported at least 63,152 evacuations as fires continued to spread.
Although the fate of their estate remains uncertain, George and Amal Clooney said they remain committed to supporting Brignoles and helping the community recover once the wildfire threat has passed.
