The driver of a Tesla was so distracted by his phone that a cop on a motorcycle was able to record him through the window. It’s hard to imagine how someone would fail to notice the blaring lights coming from a police motorcycle, but it just goes to show why looking at a phone while driving is a serious infraction. And unfortunately, some people need to get a ticket before they change their behavior.
Driver is oblivious to the cop right next to him
In a video posted by user @ohmyrian on TikTok on June 9, the driver of a black Tesla who is “on his phone” is stopped at a red light while a cop takes off his bodycam to record him. The footage looks to be taken from a passenger in the car behind the Tesla and presumably saw the driver on his phone before the sheriff showed up.
The driver is seemingly so oblivious to what’s happening around him that the motorcycle cop is able to lean toward the Tesla and hold his bodycam right at him through the passenger side window, as the red and blue emergency lights flicker on the back of his vehicle. He apparently doesn’t even see the sheriff through the side mirror, either.
It’s not until the light turns green and the motorcycle moves behind the Tesla that the driver seemingly becomes aware that he’s being followed by a cop. The driver then pulls toward the side of the road before the video ends.
At the time of writing, the TikTok has received over 440,000 likes and shared over 17,000 times. Commenters were shocked that the driver was on his phone in the first place given that Teslas have technology that allows people to connect their phones via Bluetooth for hands-free driving.
One user, among many, was surprised to find a driver be so unaware of his surroundings: “I don’t understand why it’s so hard for people to stay off their phones while behind the drivers seat like it’s honestly sad.”
