A man in California was surprised to find a black bear chilling in his backyard pool like it was taking a dip in a pond. To be fair to the bear, though, the state has been hit with a heat wave that has seen temperatures reach triple digits in some areas, and we’re betting that its black fur isn’t helping matters. Besides, California’s state flag has a bear on it, so people should expect to see a few in their yard every now and then.
Black bear treats homeowner’s pool like a small lake
On July 25, Instagram user Vatche Kojikian captured a short video of a black bear trying to cool off in his pool at his home in Pasedena, Hastings Ranch, in California. “Yogi Bear came by for a swim in my pool,” he wrote in the caption.
The footage starts with the man acting far more casual than someone normally would after finding a bear in their backyard. “Hey, buddy. What’cha doin’?” he asked.
The bear looked comfortable resting in the cool water on the steps underwater that led deeper into the pool. As the man approached, though, the beast grumbled, as if it were annoyed that it had been found out. The bear, soaking wet, begrudgingly gets out of the water, looks at the man briefly, and moans again before heading toward the exit.
“Damn, boy,” he responds. “How did you get in here?”
In a follow-up video, Kojikian tries to follow the bear, but he quickly steps back as it heads back toward the pool when it fails to find an exit. From a safe distance, he watched the large mammal clomp around the edge of the pool, past the wall lined with trees, and squeeze through the shrubbery near the back.
Several commenters sympathized with the bear who only wanted to relax. One wrote, “The bear is probably like I am leaving because you bothered my peace and quiet.” Another wrote, “He looked so annoyed, you just interrupted his spa day.”
The city had been gripped by a heat wave over the weekend with temperatures reaching as high as 100 degrees, per Pasadena Now.
