Bob Odenkirk‘s latest action thriller finally has a streaming home after its theatrical run. The Nobody star’s John Wick-adjacent film from director Ben Wheatley sets its HBO Max debut date for next month.
Normal arrives on HBO Max next month
Normal, the 2025 action-comedy starring Bob Odenkirk, arrives on HBO Max on August 14, according to Warner Bros. Discovery’s official press release. Ben Wheatley directed the film from a screenplay by Derek Kolstad. The story follows Kolstad and Odenkirk’s collaborative vision as a follow-up to their work on Nobody.
The film takes place in the fictitious town of Normal, Minnesota. Odenkirk plays an unassuming substitute sheriff, Ulysses, who carries a troubled past. His provisional posting was meant to offer respite from marital woes and recent moral injuries in the line of duty. A botched bank robbery soon interrupts the town’s tranquil pace and exposes a dark secret. Ulysses quickly discovers that the town is anything but normal.
Henry Winkler, Lena Headey, Ryan Allen, Billy MacLellan, Brendan Fletcher, Reena Jolly, and Peter Shinkoda round out the cast. Derek Kolstad wrote the script for Nobody in 2021, before filming. He and Odenkirk later developed the story further into its final screenplay. The project was then taken to the 2024 European Film Market with Wheatley attached to direct.
The film premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness program on September 7. Magnolia Pictures then acquired U.S. distribution rights and released it theatrically on April 17, 2026. The theatrical release spanned 2,000 theaters, marking Magnolia Pictures’ widest release to date. Normal opened to $2.65 million at the domestic box office.
Critics generally gave the film positive reviews. It holds a 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 160 critic reviews. Metacritic assigned it a score of 63 out of 100 based on 28 critics. CinemaScore audiences gave Normal a C+ average grade.
