Princess Diana’s former chef said she preferred London life and disliked Balmoral’s outdoor traditions.

The former royal chef explained that Diana did not enjoy horse riding or other countryside pursuits. He connected her discomfort with horses to a childhood accident involving a fall. Diana reportedly avoided riding but sometimes walked Prince William’s Shetland pony around the estate.
McGrady also said Diana “would rather have been at Kensington [Palace, her home in London], where she could go to Harvey Nichols shopping or lunch with friends. She loved all that.” Those activities gave her the lively social environment she reportedly preferred.
He added, “She didn’t like Balmoral at all.”
The chef’s comments contrasted with Diana’s experience of the royal family’s feelings about Balmoral. Queen Elizabeth reportedly loved the estate and considered it a special family retreat. Other royals also embraced the informal traditions and made their Scottish visits memorable.
