Ryan Reynolds’ New Apple TV+ Movie Features a Co-Star Fans Never Saw Coming

Ryan Reynolds‘ Mayday on Apple TV+ is all set to bring unusual comedic sparring partners that fans never saw coming: Oscar winner Kenneth Branagh. The upcoming Apple TV+ Cold War buddy action-comedy is scheduled to stream on September 4, 2026.

Why Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh are such an unexpected movie pairing

Apple TV+ dropped the first trailer on Tuesday, July 14, for “Mayday,” an action-comedy that stars the unusual pairing of the Deadpool star with Branagh, an acclaimed actor and director best known for “Oppenheimer” and his own Hercule Poirot films. While Reynolds is known for his irreverent charm and heavily comedic choice of movies, comedy isn’t typically Branagh’s lane.

Packed with a lot of fun and set to a punchy soundtrack, Mayday’s first trailer gave fans a first look at Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh’s unlikely alliance.

Reynolds stars as Lieutenant Troy Brennan, a U.S. Navy pilot whose reconnaissance mission over Soviet territory goes awry, forcing him to crash-land behind enemy lines. Kenneth Branagh plays Nikolai Ustinov, a gruff former KGB agent who becomes an unlikely ally.

Described by Apple as a “genre-bending, action-packed buddy comedy that flips the spy thriller on its head,” the trailer shows a tense standoff that gradually evolves into an uneasy alliance between the two leads.

The film combines Reynolds’ signature comedic style with Branagh’s commanding dramatic presence, creating an entertaining contrast that has already generated buzz following the trailer’s release.

Mayday is written, directed, and produced by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the filmmaking duo behind “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” and “Game Night”. They said in a statement: “The buddy films of the 1980s were a bizarre and enticing blend of humour, danger and genuine heart.”

They continued: “Mayday is our ode to this genre, with the unlikely pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Sir Kenneth Branagh in a Cold War adventure that explores what it means to be patriotic, but ultimately what it means to be human.” The movie also features Maria Bakalova, Marcin Dorociński, and David Morse in supporting roles.

Whether the pairing works will ultimately come down to chemistry, but early trailer reactions suggest audiences are intrigued by the odd-couple energy the two bring to the screen and thrilled to see how it unfolds in action.

In addition to being a lead in the movie, Reynolds is credited as a producer, while George Dewey and John G. Scotti are executive producers. Also, this is Reynolds’ second Apple TV+ collaboration, following his 2022 holiday hit “Spirited” alongside Will Ferrell.
