FedEx Truck Suddenly Loses Rear Trailer While on Highway

In what must be a FedEx driver’s worst nightmare, a video shows a trailer coming off one of the company’s trucks as it was moving at speed on a highway. Footage taken from a Garmin dash camera reveals that the rear trailer of the FedEx truck suddenly coming unhitched during a rainy day at around 6:00 a.m. and making sparks as it slid across the pavement.

Loose delivery trailer sends sparks flying across the freeway

As posted in a 24-second video that has received over 180,000 likes on Instagram, a FedEx Ground truck was passing the vehicle on the left in a center lane early in the day on Tuesday, July 7.

The truck then moved over a small bump in the highway that caused it to rock up and down with enough force that the rear trailer unhitched a few seconds later. Without being hooked to anything, the trailer dipped forward and was moving fast enough that two trails of bright-orange sparks began spilling from the front.

Within seconds, the trailer moved to the leftmost lane of the highway and hit the side of the stone guiderail. It slowed down enough that the blue vehicle sped past, so it’s unknown what happened to the trailer and if it came safely to a halt. There doesn’t seem to be any local news reports on the incident, either.

That said, several commenters on the video believe they have uncovered some information about what occurred. Some think the incident happened on the I-476, a highway that runs north and south through Pennsylvania.

Another commenter who calls himself a diesel mechanic theorizes that the driver didn’t lock the dolly’s fifth wheel at the trailer’s king pin, meaning that the trailer was secure enough not to get loose for a while on the road yet not secure enough to last the entire trip.

Other users made light of the situation, saying that this is the reason why their FedEx packages were delayed.
