Dwayne Johnson already has a new role ahead of the upcoming Moana live-action release. The wrestler-turned-actor will star in a new action drama from the Oscar-nominated director as a motorcycle stuntman with dementia.
What do we know about Dwayne Johnson’s new movie?
Johnson, who is currently busy promoting the Moana live-action film, has been cast in a new action-drama movie called Free Byrd. Greg Kwedar, who earned an Academy Award nomination for Sing Sing and Train Dreams, will be directing the film.
Dwayne Johnson will play the role of a Las Vegas motorcycle stuntman who conceals his dementia diagnosis from everyone and risks everything on a last jump. The official logline reads, “examines and confronts the mind’s vast mysteries and the beauty and power of asking for help before it’s too late.”

Speaking more about his upcoming movie from Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity production studio, Johnson said (via Variety), “‘Free Byrd’ is a gift in many ways.”
He further added, “Emblematic of life’s sacred beauty, as well as life’s harsh and callous reality. The subject matter of ‘Free Byrd’ has become deeply personal to Greg Kwedar and myself as we’ve started to unpack this fateful journey together.” Johnson will also serve as producer for Free Byrd.
Additionally, Artists Equity’s CEO and Chief Content Officer, Affleck and Damon, said, “This is a project that all of us at the company have connected with personally. Greg is one of the most exciting writer-directors working today, and Dwayne is an extraordinary talent and person. We are extremely excited that they have chosen to make this with us and very much look forward to sharing the finished film with audiences.”
Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson wrote the first draft of Free Byrd. However, Kwedar will now rewrite the script, which originally came from Jon Boyer and featured on the Black List.
As of now, Free Byrd has no official release date or additional cast details.
