Alexis Wilkins faces mic glitch during national anthem
Country music singer Alexis Wilkins experienced a technical glitch while singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the U.S. Embassy in Belgium during a celebration of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. At one point during the initial performance, Wilkins’ microphone broke down, leaving her vocals inaudible.
According to a Politico report, the celebration was attended by thousands who witnessed the equipment malfunction. Reporter Gerardo Fortuna also shared a short clip capturing the moment in a recent X post. He wrote that he heard someone behind him comment, “Maybe that’s the karaoke version.”
Wilkins reportedly struggled with the microphone buttons while trying to fix the issue. According to Politico, the country singer looked confused and “continued soundlessly until the camera cut away.”
Moments after the incident, U.S. Ambassador Bill White reportedly called Wilkins back on stage to sing the national anthem again. Her second attempt at the performance was successful.
Wilkins recently faced harsh reviews for her previous rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the opening of Donald Trump’s Great American State Fair at the National Mall on Wednesday. One commented, “You can hear a better rendition at any high school ball game,” while another said, “The good news is that it’s 11 pm when I’m seeing this and I’ve already taken my hearing aids out for the night” (via The Independent).
The singer responded to the backlash in an X post. She defended her performance, saying, “I have been a country music artist for years now…I was invited to sing this anthem on my own accord, as I have been many other places throughout my career.”
