NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani once again finds himself in the headlines after he cannonballed into a public pool wearing a two-piece suit. The Working Families Party leader made waves, literally as well as figuratively, when he jumped into the swimming pool along with a horde of community members in attire more suited for a business meeting. The video has since gone viral, with netizens lauding him for his simple yet effective gesture.
Zohran Mamdani jumps into pool with his suit on
On June 26, Mayor Zohran Mamdani kicked off summer in NYC in style by making his way into the Thomas Jefferson Pool in East Harlem in what looked like his office suit. The popular politician accompanied several New York residents and their children during the summer celebration commemorating the kids’ last day of school.
Mamdani chose to cannonball into the public pool, while still wearing his suit and tie, before exchanging greetings with the community members. He also went for a brief swim, according to the clip shared by Jenni, before exiting the water.
The 34-year-old was actually following a long-standing tradition in which New York City mayors leap into a pool to announce the start of summer. Most of Mamdani’s predecessors have engaged in the custom, with Bill de Blasio and Eric Adams being two uncommon exceptions.
Despite his free-spirited intentions, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani actually violated city pool rules by entering the water in a suit, as regulations allow swimmers to enter only in bathing suits.
“You know, thank you to Goodwill, who appreciated the suit that we got. It’s actually not as cold as you think; it’s perfect,” he noted as he headed inside.
Nevertheless, people on the internet seem to focus on the funny side of the story. “How could anyone hate a mayor who is this happy to be interacting with his community on a personal level,” said one X (formerly Twitter) user.
Another Mamdani supporter noted, “He might go down as one of the coolest mayors in the history of mayordom.” Meanwhile, a third X user quipped, “Fox News watching Zohran Mamdani make New York a better place and everyone there being really happy about it.”
