An underappreciated erotic thriller from the early 2000s starring Angelina Jolie will soon begin streaming on Prime Video. The movie is an adaptation of Cornell Woolrich’s 1947 novel Waltz into Darkness. Previously, François Truffaut adapted the novel for 1969’s Mississippi Mermaid.
Original Sin streams on Prime Video in July
The 2001 feature Original Sin will start streaming on Prime Video on July 1, according to Solzy at the Movies, IMDb, and other sites. Michael Cristofer, who previously helmed 1999’s Body Shots, wrote and directed Original Sin. The cast includes Jolie as Julia Russell / Bonny Castle, Antonio Banderas as Luis Antonio Vargas, Thomas Jane as Walter Downs / Billy / Mephisto, Jack Thompson as Alan Jordan, Gregory Itzin as Colonel Edwin Worth, Pedro Armendáriz Jr. as Jorge Cortes, and Allison Mackie as Augusta Jordan. Michelle Pfeiffer produced the feature through her Rosa Productions.
Predominantly set in late 19th-century Cuba, the plot revolves around Luis, who exchanges letters with Julia Russell from Delaware in the US, seeking to marry her. When a woman finally arrives in Cuba and introduces herself as Julia, the former is surprised as she looks nothing like the photos he received. Additionally, it turns out that Luis has also hidden the fact that he is wealthy. The two quickly marry, but Luis soon begins to discover that the woman he has married isn’t who she claims to be.
Original Sin performed poorly at the box office and currently has an abysmal 12% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Iconic film critic Roger Ebert was one of the few reviewers who gave the movie a positive review. Writing for The Chicago Sun-Times, he shared, “It’s an exuberant example of what it is — a bodice-ripping murder ‘meller’ — and at that it gets a passing grade.”
Notably, the list of movies releasing on Prime Video on July 1 also includes Gladiator, Homefront, Leaving Las Vegas, Saving Private Ryan, The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
