‘The Enemy Is Donald Trump’: Hakeem Jeffries Reminds Democrats

Hakeem Jeffries dropped a blunt reality check on Democrats after New York’s primary shakeup. The House Minority Leader addressed party unity, the Israel debate, and what he believes should be the real focus heading into the midterms. He also identified Donald Trump as the “enemy.”

Hakeem Jeffries shares blunt message after NYC sweep

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries shared a direct message after Tuesday’s New York Democratic primary elections, MSNBC’s MS NOW reported. He told host Jen Psaki that he hopes Democrats unite after the primary season ends. “The enemy is Donald Trump and MAGA extremism,” Jeffries said on Wednesday.

Tuesday’s races saw Democratic challengers who vocally criticized Israel’s government defeat pro-Israel incumbents. Several winning challengers included former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier. These candidates had led or participated in pro-Palestinian protests following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

Jeffries addressed the Israel debate within the Democratic Party during his interview with Psaki. He expressed support for Israel’s right to exist while also backing Palestinian aspirations. “We need to find a just and lasting peace,” he stated.

However, Jeffries pointed to Rep. Ritchie Torres as a counterexample to the anti-Israel sweep narrative. Torres, a staunch defender of Israel, defeated a challenger who heavily criticized his pro-Israel stance. “He won by 50 points,” Jeffries noted, highlighting the diversity of perspectives across congressional districts.

The winning challengers also received backing from the Democratic Socialists of America and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani himself faced scrutiny during his campaign for criticizing Israel’s actions in Gaza. Democratic socialism gained momentum among progressives following Sen.

Bernie Sanders’s two presidential campaigns. His bids inspired DSA-affiliated candidates like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to run and win office. Psaki acknowledged the party remains “a big diverse coalition” and added that elections offer learning opportunities. Jeffries emphasized that individual districts reflect diverse groups with varied perspectives on multiple issues.
