Barack and Michelle Obama opened up about their marriage of more than three decades. The former president said he isn’t sure it has been an “equal partnership,” admitting that he has gotten more out of the relationship than Michelle has. However, the former first lady argued that this isn’t the case and that they balance each other out well.
Barack and Michelle Obama reflect on nearly 34 years of marriage
During a new interview with PEOPLE, Barack and Michelle Obama shared their varying perspectives on their 34 years of marriage. Barack initiated as he shared their early stages of the relationship and what made his wife the woman of his dreams. “I knew almost immediately, and looks like I made a pretty good bet, that this was a one-of-a-kind woman with the integrity and character, smarts and values to make me better,” he added.
Appreciating how Michelle not only brought these values into their relationship but also inculcated them in their daughters, Malia and Sasha, he elaborated, “And that she would [give] our kids a foundation that would pay off for them — and that’s in fact what’s happened.”
Barack stated that he doesn’t know whether they have an “equal partnership.” He thinks so because he has gotten much “more” out of their bond than his wife has. “But it’s worked out for me pretty well. For her it’s probably more of a mixed bag,” the former president explained.
However, Michelle didn’t hold the same opinion as her husband, as she claimed that she believes that they are each other’s “counterbalance.” She explained, “The truth is, I probably would have been someone who stayed more put. I think I would have had a beautiful life here, but it would have been smaller.”
The “IMO” podcast co-host credited Barack with showing her, their daughters, and their family a broader perspective on what is possible in life. Michelle also praised him for being her rock through ups and downs. “And she grounds and anchors me. It’s worked out a’ight,” Barack added.
