Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcome UK’s decision to ban kids under 16 from social media
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry praised the new UK ruling about the social media ban for kids under 16. On June 15, the Sussex couple released a statement, welcoming British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s decision to implement the rule soon. “We welcome the U.K. Government’s announcement of new measures to better protect children online,” their statement read (via PEOPLE).
“The stories shared through The Lost Screen Memorial remind us that behind every debate about technology and regulation are real families whose lives have been forever changed,” it added. For those unversed, Markle attended The Lost Screen Memorial, hosted by their charity, Archewell Philanthropies, in Geneva last month. Therefore, they mentioned the same in their latest report, supporting the UK’s ruling.
Furthermore, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s statement addressed that decisions like social media bans “help reduce harm.” However, these rulings would seemingly not solve the “problem at its source.” The couple urged people to build or look for “safer platforms by design.” At the end of the day, a child’s well-being should be “ahead of engagement and profit.”
Moreover, the royal pair urged tech companies to take responsibility for creating safer designs and preventing online harm. Additionally, they claimed that the “burden” could not only be put “solely on parents and children.”
“Stronger protections are better than inaction, and today’s announcement is a welcome step forward,” the statement read, referring to the UK’s decision.
