President Donald Trump has given an update on the Iran peace deal and the Strait of Hormuz. The announcement came during a G7 summit. The latter was already overshadowed by fractures in the nascent US-Iran understanding.

The US president arrived at the Évian-les-Bains gathering, declaring the Strait of Hormuz would be “completely open” from Friday, even as Israeli actions in Lebanon and Iranian demands over waterway fees threatened to unravel the agreement within hours of its existence.
Speaking before bilateral discussions with Emmanuel Macron, Donald Trump dismissed a Franco-British proposal for a joint naval presence in the Strait. “I don’t think we will need much help,” he stated, projecting confidence that American assets alone would secure the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump’s remarks mixed economic optimism with security assurances because of the Iran deal. “I think a lot of great things are going to happen in the Middle East right now,” Trump said. “And very importantly, the oil is plummeting down and the stock market is shooting up like a rocket today.” On nuclear concerns, he added, “The main thing is that Iran will not have a nuclear weapon. They fully agreed to that with strong policing powers.”
A memorandum of understanding is set for formal signature in Geneva on Friday. Vice President JD Vance and Iran’s lead negotiator, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, will attend the ceremony. The deal signing would bring an end to the US naval blockade of Iran and allow unrestricted transit through the Strait of Hormuz, critical for global energy supplies (Via The Guardian).
