Donald Trump Turns to Jay Clayton for DNI Role After Bill Pulte Backlash

President Donald Trump just shook up the intelligence world with a surprising new pick for his top spy chief. The president nominated a well-known legal figure to lead national intelligence after his previous choice sparked a political firestorm on Capitol Hill.

Donald Trump nominates Jay Clayton for DNI role

President Donald Trump on Thursday nominated Jay Clayton to serve as director of national intelligence. Clayton currently holds the position of U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. He previously served as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Associated Press reported.

The announcement came through social media amid mounting congressional pressure over the role. Tulsi Gabbard resigned from the position last month, leaving it without a permanent occupant. Trump’s interim appointment of Bill Pulte as acting director drew sharp criticism from both parties.

“Few people anywhere in the Legal Community are respected at the level of Jay,” Trump posted online. Speaking from the Oval Office, he described Clayton as an “incredible talent” with unmatched credentials. Trump also confirmed plans to keep Pulte in the role temporarily before Clayton’s confirmation.

The Senate Intelligence Committee scheduled Clayton’s confirmation hearing for Wednesday of next week. Senate Majority Leader John Thune pledged to expedite the nomination process through the chamber. “I don’t know what realistic is, but we’re gonna probe the limits of it,” Thune told reporters.

Democrats have tied the nomination dispute to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act renewal. They refuse to extend the law until Trump formally withdraws Pulte’s acting appointment. The critical surveillance authority expires at midnight on Friday without congressional action.

Representative Jim Himes, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, welcomed the choice. He stated that Clayton’s deep commitment to public service would make him a terrific DNI. Himes suggested the earlier nomination of Clayton could have prevented considerable political friction.

Clayton’s Manhattan office recently handled several high-profile national security prosecutions. These include the arrest of a suspect accused of plotting terrorist attacks across multiple nations. His office also facilitated the release of thousands of sealed documents from the Epstein and Maxwell cases.
