Why Donald Trump’s NBA Finals Visit Sparked Online Backlash During Iran Crisis

While President Donald Trump became the first US president to attend an NBA Finals game, his very presence and antics, like filling his mouth with pizza, have drawn negative reactions from the public.

Trump appeared at Madison Square Garden the same day that an Apache helicopter was caught in crossfire between Iran and Israel and was brought down near Oman.

Donald Trump is being criticized for his NBA Finals attendance amid a war with Iran

Political commentator Joanne Carducci wrote in a post via X on Tuesday, June 9, “If Joe Biden had been stuffing his face with pizza and french fries at a basketball game while one of our Apache helicopters was being shot down in a war he started, Fox ‘News’ would be calling for his head.”

The president was not well received by the crowd, who loudly booed his presence, not surprising since New York City has historically voted heavily Democratic in national elections. The president’s presence also meant disruption of the entire seating and management as he came with security paraphernalia at Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.

Commenting on the horrible optics of a president attending a basketball game even as the country is engaged in a war, a user wrote, “MAGA Cultists would be calling for his head, if President Biden turned up to a basketball game in the first place.” Carducci also commented, saying, “They would be mad if it was Biden or [Barack] Obama, but Trump can do it, and they say nothing!!!”

Trump has been under constant scrutiny over the Iran War crisis, prompting him to assure Americans that they are likely to reach an agreement with Iran shortly. So far, peace is nowhere in sight.
