Tom Holland Had To Put Marvel on Hold for This Movie

Tom Holland asked Marvel and Sony to push back his next Spider-Man movie for a major new project. The actor said taking the film meant delaying Marvel plans for a while.

The scheduling conflict created a difficult decision behind the scenes. In the end, the move reshaped the timeline for both productions and may have helped improve the next Spider-Man film in ways fans did not expect.

Tom Holland says he delayed his Spider-Man movie for The Odyssey

Before cameras rolled on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Tom Holland found himself caught between two huge films. Speaking to GQ, the actor revealed that Christopher Nolan offered him the role of Telemachus, son of Odysseus, in The Odyssey at a time when both movies were set to begin production on the exact same date.

Holland said he warned Nolan that accepting the role would require having a difficult conversation with Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman. “So I said to Chris [Nolan], like, ‘Look, I want to do this movie, but if I’m going to do it, I’m going to have to call Sony and have a very uncomfortable conversation,” Holland remembers. He ultimately made the call, asking the studio to move the Spider-Man schedule so he could join Nolan’s epic.

Fortunately for Holland, Sony agreed. The actor believes Nolan’s reputation played a major role in that decision. According to Holland, studios know Nolan’s productions typically stay on track and avoid lengthy delays. The Odyssey reportedly wrapped nine days ahead of schedule, reinforcing that confidence.

What initially looked like a setback for Sony eventually produced unexpected benefits in the form of filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton. The delay was a blessing in disguise, as without it “we wouldn’t have had Destin,” said Holland. The extra development time also gave the creative team several additional months to refine the screenplay.

Now, both projects are headed toward back-to-back summer releases. The Odyssey is scheduled for July 17, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day follows on July 31.
