Prime Video’s New Sci-Fi Show From Popular Franchise Gets Axed

Prime Video just pulled the plug on a highly anticipated sci-fi series before it even got off the ground. The streamer’s concerns about the show’s audience reach led to a surprising cancellation.

New Stargate TV series is not moving forward at Prime Video

Amazon has cancelled the new Stargate TV series, Variety reported.

The streaming giant first announced the show with a series order in November last year. Writer and showrunner Martin Gero, who previously worked on Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, was leading the project.

Amazon executives grew concerned about the show’s potential audience reach. According to a person with knowledge of the situation, they felt Gero’s take “would not have broad appeal beyond the franchise’s already dedicated fanbase,” as per the outlet. The cancellation comes despite Amazon’s initial commitment to expanding the franchise after acquiring MGM Studios.

Reportedly, under a deal, Gero will develop other projects in the future at Amazon MGM Studios. Meanwhile, the company is finding new ways to take the Stargate franchise beyond this particular iteration.

The creative team behind the cancelled series featured several notable producers. Executive producers included Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi worked as consulting producers on the project. Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who worked on the original 1994 film, also served as executive producers.

Amazon never released any plot details for Gero’s version of the show. The company first began exploring new Stargate projects back in 2022. That development push followed Amazon’s high-profile acquisition of MGM Studios and its extensive content library.

Originally, the Stargate franchise launched as a 1994 movie. It features James Spader and Kurt Russell. The film went on to spawn multiple television series over the years. Stargate SG-1 aired for 10 seasons and featured Richard Dean Anderson and Amanda Tapping.

Another series, Stargate Atlantis, also ran for five seasons from 2004 to 2008. Stargate Origins, which came out in 2018, was the recent entry in the franchise.
