Road House 2 Director Previews ‘Massive’ Scale of Jake Gyllenhaal Sequel

Jake Gyllenhaal is returning for Road House 2. Director Ilya Naishuller says Prime Video wanted to make everything bigger. The 2024 reboot of the 1989 cult classic became Amazon Prime Video’s most-watched original movie, surpassing 50 million viewers in its first two weekends. That success triggered a swift green light for a follow-up, with Gyllenhaal reprising his role as ex-UFC fighter Elwood Dalton. Now, with filming complete and post-production underway, Naishuller has given the first real glimpse of what audiences can expect.

Ilya Naishuller talks about the scale of Road House 2

Speaking to ScreenRant, Naishuller shared the studio’s ambitions: “I remember Amazon saying, ‘It’s worth trying to make everything bigger,'” he said. “I loved to hear it.”

Naishuller takes over directing duties from Doug Liman, who helmed the first movie. The director made clear he is not attempting a radical reinvention. “The point of working in a franchise is not to make it your own,” he explained. “It’s about adding yourself to the story while pleasing the core audience and grabbing some more people.” He noted that restraint matters too. “You don’t always need to insert more of yourself. There are so many ideas, we did these bits in the room, but at a certain point, you understand that it’s getting to be a distraction.”

The scale became tangible during production. Naishuller described walking through a corridor filled with Road House 2 cast members and telling Jake Gyllenhaal, “That’s a massive film in there. I can’t wait for it to be shared with everybody.”

The sequel expands its cast considerably. Dave Bautista joins the ensemble, telling Collider the film is “amplified from the first film” with “a lot more fighters, a lot more badasses.” The roster bears that out. Indonesian action star Iko Uwais, known for The Raid films, features prominently. UFC lightweight Dustin Poirier and fighter Jay Heiron bring real combat experience. Actors Aldis Hodge, Peter Sarsgaard, and more round out the additions.

Road House 2 is expected to release around late 2026 or early 2027.
