Stephen Colbert reveals the one thing about Late Show’s end that ‘breaks’ his heart
Stephen Colbert reflected on one aspect of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s end that broke his heart. Ahead of the show’s finale, Colbert gave fans a little set tour with Architectural Digest. He showed off the interiors of the historic Ed Sullivan Theater. Notably, Ed Sullivan Theater has been home to The Late Show since 1993, first with David Letterman and then Stephen Colbert.
The talk show host spoke fondly of the Ed Sullivan Theater, where he has interviewed numerous celebrities. Colbert began, “I love being in a real theater with a fly gallery. Been here for 11 years and [I] try to never take it for granted.”
He continued, “And of course now every time I walk out on stage, I look around and try to drink it in because you’re never gonna get this again. Because we’re not being replaced by a late-night show, I don’t know what’s going to happen to the Ed Sullivan Theater, but something should happen. It’s too beautiful a space.”
Colbert explained how “too much work” has gone into making the Ed Sullivan Theater “a great television or broadcast performance space.” For those unversed, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Supremes, and Elvis Presley have performed at the famed studio (via Entertainment Weekly).
The 62-year-old host declared, “It’s the best broadcast space in New York City. The fact that nothing’s gonna come in here breaks my heart, but someone will figure something out. I wish them all the luck in the world ’cause they’re gonna love it.” The final episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will air on CBS on Thursday, May 21.
