Seth Rogen criticizes screenwriters using AI
In his interview with Brut at Cannes 2026, Seth Rogen spoke against the use of AI in writing. He was joined by Sarah Leavitt and his wife, Lauren Miller Rogen. “I don’t understand what it’s supposed to do,” he said. “Every time I see a video on Instagram that’s like, ‘Hollywood is cooked,’ what follows is, like, the most stupid dog shit I’ve ever seen in my life,” he continued.
Rogen further added, “And if your instinct is to use AI and not go through that process, you shouldn’t be a writer, because then you’re not writing.”The 44-year-old chuckled and said, “Go do something else,” while Miller remarked on AI as “using a computer.”
The Studio star continued, “And if you don’t want to go through the process, you shouldn’t be a writer. The idea of a tool that makes me write less is not appealing to me, because I like writing.”
Leavitt also shared her thoughts, “I’m a creative writing professor and one of the things we like to say to our students is, ‘One of the things AI can’t do is go through the creative process.” The author explained, “So, you’re not just creating a product that’s done. You’re going through the process of figuring it out, which we did for 10 years!”
Miller agreed and stated, “I don’t know, I guess it’s what it’s only what’s fed into it. And I think that I don’t know how you could ever feed in what we went through.” The reporter further shared that she is happy there was no AI in Tangles, which is based on Leavitt’s graphic memoir of the same name.
“Not at all. It’s hand-drawn animation!” Rogen shared. The award-winning writer emphasized that “Every frame has a human touch to it.”
