Julia Louis-Dreyfus recalled a “big fat argument” that involved co-creator Larry David and executives from production company Castle Rock Entertainment while filming an episode of Seinfeld.
Originally released in 1989, the sitcom centered on a comedian and his three eccentric friends residing in New York City as they deal with the absurdities of everyday life. While a light-hearted atmosphere is usually expected on the set of a comedy sitcom, a clash of opinions over a particular scene ended up creating a heated environment.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus recalls huge argument on Seinfeld set: ‘Larry was livid’
In a conversation on the Awards Chatter podcast by THR reporter Scott Feinberg, Louis-Dreyfus revealed that a tense moment sparked between Larry David and executives from Castle Rock Entertainment over a scene from the episode titled “The Deal.” The scene in question involved Elaine Benes and Jerry Seinfeld’s attempts to convert their close friendship into a friends-with-benefits arrangement.
She said, “There was a big fat argument on set about that because Jerry and Elaine sleep together in that episode and they sort of make a deal about it. There was tension between creatives — actually, it was Castle Rock and Larry — about whether or not to turn this into a will they, won’t they? Larry was livid.” She revealed that David had no intention of leaning into the romantic, cute, or sexy aspects of the storyline.
Moreover, in a recent The Hollywood Reporter interview, the Thunderbolts* actress revealed that she and David enjoyed each other’s company and spent a lot of time after the latter joined the staff in her third year.
She mentioned that her character was excluded from the pilot script written by David, and NBC initially had no plans to move forward with the show he pitched, titled The Seinfeld Chronicles.
However, late Rick Ludwin, who managed special programming at NBC, invested in the project and made it happen. “God love Rick Ludwin, he’s passed away, but he was an incredibly wonderful guy, and we really have him to thank,” she said, extending her gratitude towards Ludwin.
