Jennifer Anniston’s 8% RT Movie Beats Tom Cruise’s $1.5B Sequel on Mother’s Day

Over the weekend, a universally panned Jennifer Aniston film took over Paramount+ streaming charts amid Mother’s Day. It was the final film directed by Garry Marshall, the filmmaker behind hits like Pretty Woman and The Princess Diaries.

2016’s Mother’s Day resurfaces on streaming over the weekend

According to FlixPatrol’s report for May 10, 2026, Mother’s Day is the #1 film on Paramount+ in the United States. This seemed fitting as May 10 also marked this year’s Mother’s Day celebration.

The Top 10 list was previously dominated by Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick and the 2026 horror film, Primate, which have now fallen to #2 and #3, respectively. The list also includes Jason Statham’s The Mechanic at #4, Bruce Willis’s Gasoline Alley in #5, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie trailing at #6, Channing Tatum’s Roofman at #7, and Mark Wahlberg’s Shooter coming at #8.

Alongside directing Mother’s Day, Garry Marshall also co-wrote it with Tom Hines, Lily Hollander, and Matt Walker. The film’s cast includes Jennifer Aniston, Timothy Olyphant, Kate Hudson, Julia Roberts, Jason Sudeikis, Britt Robertson, and Margo Martindale, among others.

Mother’s Day follows several interconnected families in the days leading up to Mother’s Day. The story centers on Sandy (Aniston), a divorced mother of two, as she copes with her ex-husband, Henry, marrying a younger woman.

Open Road Films, LLC, an independent studio, distributed the film worldwide. Mother’s Day opened in theaters on April 29, 2016. Despite an impressive cast and reputed director, it failed to impress the majority of the viewers.

On Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 150 critics’ scores, the average rating is a mere 8%. However, the audience had a warmer response, resulting in a score of 44%. Metacritic reported a similar trend, with a critics’ score of 18/100 and a user score of 2.8/10. Nonetheless, Mother’s Day performed quite well at the box office. Made on a budget of $25 million, it made about $48.7 million globally.
