Dune 3’s Surprising Runtime Sets New Record for Sci-Fi Trilogy

Dune: Part Three‘s runtime has reportedly been unveiled, setting a new record for the franchise. The film hits theaters later this year and serves as the final installment of the trilogy that began in 2021. It will adapt the events of Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah, the second book in the sci-fi novel series. Denis Villeneuve directed it and also co-wrote the script with Brian K. Vaughan. He also co-produced with Cale Boyter, Mary Parent, Brian Herbert, Thomas Tull, and Tanya Lapointe.

Dune 3 runtime breaks shocking franchise record

Dune: Part Three reportedly has a runtime of two hrs and 20 minutes, according to the official IMAX website.

This makes the film the shortest in Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy. The original has a runtime of two hours and 35 minutes. Meanwhile, the sequel, Part Two, runs for two hours and 46 minutes, essentially making it the longest.

On the other hand, the runtime makes it slightly longer than David Lynch’s 1984 feature adaptation of Dune, which is two hours and 17 minutes long.

However, its possible that the runtime could be a placeholder, considering how the movie is eight months away from release. The final length will be clear closer to or at the time of its premiere.

Dune: Part Three will take place 17 years after the last film — a departure from Dune Messiah’s 12-year time jump — and dive into Paul Atreides’ reign as Padishah Emperor. It will see him confront the consequences of holding immense power and deal with several threats to his throne, including Scytale.

Villeneuve promised at a Q&A event for the trailer launch that the threequel would be very different in terms of tone, rhythm, and pace. He also said that compared to the previous entries, this one would be “more action-packed and tense.”

Timothée Chalamet leads the cast, reprising his role of Atreides. Also returning from previous entries are Zendaya as Chani, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho/Hayt, Florence Pugh as Irulan, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Mohiam, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, and Javier Bardem as Stilgar.

New additions include Robert Pattinson as Scytale, Isaach de Bankolé as Farok, Momoa’s son Nakoa-Wolf as Leto II Atreides, and Ida Brooke as Ghanima Atreides.

Dune: Part Three arrives on December 18, 2026, going up against Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday at the box office.
