Savannah Guthrie’s return to “Today” reportedly will not be a proper reunion. As April 6 nears, a new source-based report has revealed that the anchor’s comeback would focus on stability, with Craig Melvin beside her and Hoda Kotb absent from the set. The claim landed just days after Guthrie’s emotional sit-down about her mother Nancy’s abduction, making the show’s next move feel especially sensitive and closely managed behind the scenes.
Hoda Kotb won’t be part of Savannah Guthrie’s big comeback moment, claims source
Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb were again linked in a fresh behind-the-scenes report from Rob Shuter’s Substack. The report says Kotb would not be on set when Guthrie returns to “Today” on April 6. One insider said, “This is Savannah and Craig’s moment now.” The same source added, “Moving forward, they are the co-hosts. That’s the team.” In that telling, the show’s direction is no longer in question.
According to the Substack report, producers saw Melvin as the clearest on-air partner for Guthrie during a difficult stretch. Another insider said, “There’s no confusion anymore,” adding further, “Craig is the guy next to Savannah.”
Earlier this week, Kotb conducted Guthrie’s first televised interview since her mother’s disappearance. So, the timing made this reported reset more noticeable, even as recent public moments between the longtime colleagues stayed supportive.
The report says bringing Kotb into Guthrie’s return could complicate the message. A producer-level source said bluntly, “This isn’t a three-host show. It would feel awkward.” Another insider added that Kotb was open to appearing and “would happily stop by,” but producers feared “it muddies the message.”
Instead, the report says the priority is consistency for Guthrie. “She needs consistency,” one source explained. “Craig provides that. He’s steady, supportive, and completely in her corner.”
The same report insists there is “no bad blood,” adding that Kotb would “always be part of the Today family.” That detail also aligned with older feud rumors being publicly dismissed. It seems that this latest claim is focused less on conflict and more on format.
