Mike Johnson Sends Warning Over Donald Trump’s AI Framework

On March 20, 2026, the Trump administration unveiled its National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence, and despite a mixed response from Congress, Speaker Mike Johnson strongly endorsed the vision and sent a warning to Congress about adopting the Framework fast, or risk falling behind other nations in the race.

Mike Johnson speaks up on Donald Trump’s AI framework

Mike Johnson, the speaker of the United States House of Representatives, spoke up for President Donald Trump’s recently released National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence. The framework aims to replace the patchy state-centric rules with a single, uniform federal standard for AI. It also calls for stronger parental supervision, preventing censorship, and enabling innovation through technology.

“To succeed, you all need confidence that tomorrow’s rules are going to be coherent and consistent and follow common sense iterations of the rules that we established today,” the Republican said, “And that’s why Congress will utilize existing structures to establish safeguards and rules of the road, so to speak, without smothering the whole marketplace with red tape (via Politico).”

However, this framework may not be embraced with open arms by Democrats.

Hence, Johnson sent out a warning to anyone not willing to embrace this change. The speaker said, “Inaction is unacceptable, and while the window for American AI leadership is open, it will not stay open indefinitely.”

Johnson’s warning seems to indicate that congressional gridlock on the new framework could hurt America’s chances of staying on top of the AI race, with China closing in.

So far, the tech industry has praised President Donald Trump’s Framework for its light-touch strategy that removes important barriers to innovation. However, some critics argue that it fails to provide recommendations on key issues that hold Big Tech accountable.

Some believe that the rules that have been set in place for children and the use of AI should be enough to convince Democrats to jump on board, but others believe it would not be enough.

More details about the issue are expected to arrive soon.
