8 Mile to stream on Peacock next month
Eminem’s 8 Mile will start streaming on Peacock from Sunday, March 1, 2026 (via ComicBook.com). Set in 1995 Detroit, the film follows Jimmy “B-Rabbit” Smith Jr., a struggling young rapper trying to rise from poverty and attempt to break into hip-hop. But after choking during a rap battle, he begins to question his future.
Curtis Hanson directed the film from a script by Scott Silver. While the film’s story is largely fictional, it incorporates certain elements and incidents from Eminem’s life. In a 2002 interview with The Guardian, Hanson explained that to ensure an authentic portrayal, Silver wrote the script with the rapper in his mind and reportedly worked with him from the start.
Hanson also admitted he had doubts about casting the Grammy winner to play Jimmy. But after spending time with him, Eminem’s “charisma” and the “emotions” in his eyes helped him make the decision. Reportedly, the “Mockingbird” singer passed on the offer to star in Training Day and The Fast And The Furious to keep working on 8 Mile (via Southpawer). The roles in those movies ultimately went to Ethan Hawke and Paul Walker, respectively.
The film also starred Kim Basinger as Stephanie, Mekhi Phifer as David Porter, Brittany Murphy as Alex, Evan Jones as Cheddar Bob, and Anthony Mackie as Clarence. It was Mackie’s feature film debut as well.
Released on November 8, 2002, 8 Mile was both a critical and commercial success. It currently has a 76% approval rating from 211 critics on Rotten Tomatoes. It ended its theatrical run with a global haul of more than $242 million, as per Box Office Mojo. In 2003, Eminem won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for his track “Lose Yourself.”
