New Glen Powell Movie’s Box Office off to a Terrible Start

Glen Powell‘s new movie has reportedly gotten off to a poor start at the box office. The film How to Make a Killing had a weak opening, with the figure sharply contrasting its reported budget. Estimates point to the film becoming the actor’s second box office flop in recent months. The film’s story follows a blue-collar worker, Becket Redfellow, who was disowned by his incredibly wealthy family at birth and aims to put himself in line to inherit their wealth through murder.

A24’s How to Make a Killing gets a weak start at box office

Glen Powell’s new movie, How to Make a Killing, reportedly opened to just $3.56 million at the box office on the opening weekend across 1625 theaters (via Deadline). As a result, it has found itself in sixth place in the weekend box office charts, surpassed by GOAT, Wuthering Heights, I Can Only Imagine 2, Crime 101, and Send Help.

Accordingly, the film, made on an estimated budget of $40 million, could potentially be the actor’s second box office flop in recent months.

The Running Man, also starring Powell in the lead role, hit theaters on November 14, 2025, and disappointed at the box office, grossing only an estimated $69.3 million worldwide against an estimated budget of $110 million.

How to Make a Killing was released in the United States by A24 on February 20, 2026. StudioCanal will release the film in the United Kingdom on March 13, 2026. Meanwhile, the film will premiere in France on March 25, 2026.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a rotten score of 49%. However, it has a much better audience score of 77%.

There is also currently a similar difference between critic and audience responses on Metacritic. The film has a “mixed or average” Metascore score of 52, based on 34 critical reviews, but a “generally favorable” user score of 7.7.

John Patton Ford directed and wrote the film, loosely inspired by Robert Hamer’s 1949 British film Kind Hearts and Coronets. That film, in turn, is based on Roy Horniman’s 1907 novel, Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal.

Powell stars in the lead role as Becket Redfellow alongside Margaret Qualley, Jessica Henwick, Ed Harris, and Topher Grace, among others.
