Garrett Morris, best known as the first Black cast member of the sketch comedy program Saturday Night Live, was also a part of the iconic sitcom The Jeffersons. He appeared on the show for five episodes during Season 8 in 1981. During that time, he shared the screen with Sherman Hemsley, who passed away in 2012.

Morris recalled that Hemsley was great to work with. “I was really happy when Norman Lear came up with that idea [for Jimmy] because I wanted to work with both Isabel [Sanford] and Sherman Hemsley,” Morris said about his collaboration with the comedian (via PEOPLE), “Really, he was great to work with, man.”

Morris further revealed, “Every Wednesday, he would feed the whole cast. He would hire this Asian restaurant to come in and feed us.”

Garrett Morris further recalled that Hemsley was one of the people who gave him “a lot of room to do stuff that [he] wanted to do.” The comedian added, “I could throw in a couple of words and a couple of things that had went on the page. Of course, if you know anything about writers, particularly then, you don’t veer away from what they’ve written down, even if they ain’t working.” He concluded, “But it was a great cast to be with.”

The Jeffersons ran for 11 seasons, and Hemsley led it until the very end. It remains one of the most acclaimed sitcoms. It was a spinoff of the famous sitcom All in the Family.
