Johnny Depp left netizens surprised with his unrecognizable look for his role as Ebenezer Scrooge in the new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic, “A Christmas Carol.” On January 28, photos of Depp from the film’s set surfaced on social media and quickly went viral.
Johnny Depp looks different in new set photos
Johnny Depp, long celebrated for his ability to disappear into his roles, is once again undergoing a striking transformation to portray Ebenezer Scrooge. In the new photos from the film’s set in London (via PEOPLE), he looked starkly different. He wore a big blue coat with a black outfit underneath and black pajamas for bottoms.
With his heavy makeup and prosthetics, he was hardly recognisable. His salt-and-pepper hair was visible from under the black nightcap. He was laughing along with his co-star and scene partner, Andrea Riseborough. The 44-year-old is portraying the Ghost of Christmas Past in the upcoming film.
Riseborough wore white makeup from head to toe, concealing her hair and body entirely. She donned a long, billowy white gown. White contact lenses completed the transformation, heightening the eerie, ghostly effect of her appearance.
Ti West is helming the film titled Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. West is most popular for directing A24’s horror trilogy, X, Pearl, and MaXXXine. Besides Depp and Riseborough, Tramell Tillman, Ian McKellen, Rupert Grint, Daisy Ridley, and Sam Claflin will also appear in the movie.
This film marks Depp’s first major studio film in a long time. In 2023, he appeared in Jeanne du Barry and also had a lead role in Day Drinker opposite Penelope Cruz. He also directed the 2024 biographical movie, Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness.
Last June, Deadline had reported that Nosferatu director Robert Eggers was working with Warner Bros. on an adaptation of A Christmas Carol. At the time, Willem Dafoe was in talks to play the lead role in the film that would lean heavily into the horror theme.
