Shōgun Actor Teases His Character Could Die in Season 2

As FX’s acclaimed series Shōgun prepares for its highly anticipated Season 2, one star has predicted a grim outcome for his character. Takehiro Hira, who plays Ishido Kazunari, believes his time in feudal Japan may be cut short when the story resumes.

Despite having seen only one script for the Shōgun Season 2, Takehiro Hira has a strong suspicion about his character’s destiny. The actor has grounded his prediction in the historical roots of the series.

“I can’t really talk about that, but you know, the older characters in Shogun loosely follow the actual historical figures. So my guy doesn’t really survive much after the big war, the battle. He then offered a glimpse of what that end might look like, adding, “I will probably have an honorable death.” But he teased his return, saying, “But I could come back as a…”

This comes after the announcement for Shōgun Season 2 was made, confirming that production will commence in January. The new season will jump ahead 10 years, exploring a transformed arc and its characters a decade after the events of the first season.

The returning cast includes stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis, who will be joined by new members Asami Mizukawa, Jun Kunimura, and Masataka Kubota, among others. Behind the camera, a mix of familiar and new directors will direct episodes, including Season 1 directors Hiromi Kamata and Takeshi Fukunaga, as well as Anthony Byrne and Kate Herron.

Series co-creator Justin Marks has promised an epic scale for Shōgun Season 2, describing it as both a “sweeping, unexpected love story” and a tragic tale of war. “I don’t think you’ve ever seen anything like this kind of scale, this kind of tragedy, and this kind of humanity,” he shared.

As of now, there’s no official release date for Shōgun Season 2.
