‘Sherlock’ Season 4 Gets a New Teaser, And a Release Date

“Something is coming” to Sherlock season 4, but it may be larger than the title character initially realized!

Today, BBC dropped a new trailer for the upcoming series of Sherlock TV movies, which will comprise the fourth season. In the clip, Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman) are plagued by Toby Jones’ new villain as they wonder if their adversary, James Morriarty (Andrew Scott) has somehow cheated death. But if Moriarty isn’t alive, who’s making the public believe that he’s back?

More pressingly, Jones’ character may be directly responsible for the increased jeopardy of everyone Sherlock and Watson know and love. Even Mrs. Hudson appears to be threatened in this clip, as some long-lost personal demons from the past resurface.

BBC also announced that the fourth season will premiere in the United Kingdom on January 1, 2017. And it did so with a very ominous image:

It’s the broken choard that really sells the image. It’s easy to miss on the first glance, but once you see it, you can’t miss it again.

Cumberbatch recently made headlines when he made comments that suggested this could be the final season. He later clarrifed that he never specifically said that, but he seemed to indicate that this might be the final batch of episodes for an extended period of time.

PBS will broadcast the new season of Sherlock in the United States, but that may not happen until later in 2017.
