BOTM: The Silent Comedy Debut Haunting ‘California Queen’ (Exclusive Performance)

As indie-folk has taken commanding leaps in the modern music landscape, the stage has been set for San Diego’s gospel-inspired cabaret rockers The Silent Comedy to hit a high stride as the first Band of The Month featured artist of 2014.

With the soulful energy of a Southern-Baptist spiritual revival, the band’s early EPs and two studio albums (their debut LP Sunset Stables, and the self-produced sophomore album Common Faults) were met with increasing critical acclaim and an ocean of new fans. Two sold-out pressings of Common Faults later, the band have an electrifying new EP with Friends Divide (available on iTunes), featuring cohesively stronger musicianship and more evolved songwriting from the brothers Joshua and Jeremiah Zimmerman, seamlessly excellent drummer Chad Lee and awesomely mustachio’d guitarist Justin Buchanan.

Kicking off their BOTM feature with a rollicking “God Neon” and a heartcrusher performance of “Always Two,” TSC have blown us away with their January series run. This was ratcheted even higher with last week’s seething rendition of “Exploitation”. Now we bring you the debut of “California Queen,” a CraveOnline exclusive that puts a magnifying glass on people’s dreams of Hollywood.

Joshua further explains the song: “Hollywood is not a place, but an idea. Growing up in southern California, we always tried to dissuade our visiting Midwestern relatives from actually going to the city itself. Sometimes it’s better to let an image live in your head. California Queen explores both sides of this divide.” He continued, “Some songs take years of toil and tweaking, but California Queen came to me in a flash, and the general pieces of the song were fleshed out in a matter of minutes. Some things you just can’t explain, so you have to sing about them. If someone loves their home, they will never understand why you don’t. So it’s best just to listen to the songs. “

Crave is proud to premiere this beautiful track, to tie up TSC’s run as January’s Band of The Month. Check it out below!

Don’t forget to pick up the band’s Common Faults album! Also sit in on our interview with Josh, in which he explains the painstaking process of creating the artwork for Friends Divide, the continually evolving sound of the band and more.
