Riot Fest | Yelawolf for President

Team Yelawolf has a dress code. Tattoos, a flat brimmed black felt hat, and a smirk.

Yelawolf kicked off his set dissimilar to every other artist we saw at Riot Fest, by doing a very base-filled sound check right over Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness‘ set. While the reality is that there’s no way McMahon heard – artists have earbuds in so they’re pretty much drowning out the noise – for the audience, it was not exactly an optimal user experience. It was unnecessary, and actually not cool.

While we could hold a grudge at the festival faux pas, Yelawolf was one of the best sets throughout the weekend. Yelawolf’s stage presence is about 3 feet taller than he is, and DJ Trevor behind him, had a similarly impressive state, if not better. His guitarist/keyboardist added an additional layer into what is, in reality, computerized beats and a lot of electro music, but with the instruments on stage, the sound was level up’d.

Yelawolf performed a variety of fan favorites from both studio albums, the newest just released in April. To this end, he asked who bought the album, and who stole it. If you stole it, burn 20 copies and give it to people who don’t have it, he said. If you bought it, burn 20 copies and give it to 20 people who don’t have it. It was marketing that resonated, I’m sure.

Taking breaks to shake up Tecate tall boys and throw them into the crowd, it was a move that festival sponsors Heineken (owners of Tecate, Sol and Dos Equis) could not have been more pleased about. Along with the fact that halfway through his set, he picked up what must have been a 50 pound speaker and tossed it on the ground. #respect.
