NYIAS 2014: Mazda MX-5 Miata Uses 25th to Look Ahead

The Mazda Miata MX-5 celebrated its 25th anniversary at NYIAS 2014 with a museum-worthy collection of past models and the unveiling of the car’s 2015 edition.

The New York International Auto Show saw MX-5 auto show concepts, race cars and production models dominate Mazda’s expo floor presentation. The little two-seater arrived in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show, immediately making an impression much larger than its classic, smooth-edged roadster frame. It was unlike anything built at the time and still carries a defiant atmosphere of irresponsible fun other cars can’t manage anymore.

You can see a few images from the assembled historical collection below.

However, the bigger news out of NYIAS was the debut of the special 2016 anniversary edition of the Miata – the first with the signature SKYACTIV chassis. Mazda’s successful SKYACTIV line looks to build the most efficient engines possible while perfecting lighter materials and tighter transmissions. The entire SKYACTIV package makes Mazda’s now lighter and more high-tech product line moving quicker with less fuel spent.

For the Miata, reducing weight means more speed and even better handling for a car already beloved for whipping its way in and out of traffic and biting off every apex.
