“24: Live Another Day” is heading towards the end of its run. And as predicted, a new villain has stepped forward now that Margot Al-Harazi (Michelle Fairley) aka Lady Droneheart and her children have been killed.

Actually, the new villain is someone that we’ve seen before. So, full spoilers ahead before this week’s recap!

The Handoff

Steve Navarro (Benjamin Bratt) goes on the run with the Override device as Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) pursues him. Steve even grabs a semi-automatic weapon from a soldier who was just chillin’ on the streets of London, but he doesn’t manage to hit Jack. Meanwhile, Adrian Cross (Michael Wincott) tells Chloe O’Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub) about his grand plans to use the Override device to destroy the world’s ability to wage technological warfare.

Cross dupes Steve into dropping off the device, but he betrays Steve by not arranging for a vehicle to pick him up. Jack manages to take Steve into custody and he catches sight of Cross and Chloe fleeing by train… leading Jack to wonder if Chloe is working with the enemy.

“Full Immunity is Not on The Table. But your Hand Is.”

Chloe doesn’t take long to prove that she’s still on Jack’s side, as she makes an attempt to steal the Override device and escape from Cross. Cross actually has to get Chloe at gunpoint in order to force her back into his car. Back at the CIA station, Kate Morgan (Yvonne Strahovski) is livid when she learns that Steve was the man who framed her husband for selling secrets to China.

Erik Ritter (Gbenga Akinnagbe) is left as the ranking CIA agent and Jack manages to talk him into letting him interrogating Steve. When Steve isn’t impressed by Jack or his threats, Jack scoffs at Steve’s request for immunity and he smashes his hand on the table.

Fakeout

In the aftermath of the failed interrogation, Jack and Kate bond over their mutual losses. Jack actually brings up Renee Walker and he tells Kate that his quest for vengeance didn’t actually solve anything. Elsewhere in London, Mark Boudreau (Tate Donovan) grows agitated with his wife, Audrey Heller (Kim Raver) over her connection with Jack. To make sure that Jack is out of the way (and to save himself from blackmail and treason), Mark provides the Russians with a way to track Jack.

Back at the CIA, Kate seemingly takes it upon herself to immediately execute Steve for his betrayal. Jack points a gun at Kate and demands that she stand down. In desperation, Steve reveals that he tagged the Override device with a tracking signal. To Steve’s horror, Jack and Kate reveal that it was ruse designed to sabotage any chance he had for immunity.

“China Has a Long Memory, Mr Bauer.”

Cross and Chloe return to find that their fellow members of Open Cell have been slaughtered. And the man behind it is… Cheng Zhi (Tzi Ma) from “24” Seasons 4, 5 and 6! It makes sense that Cheng would be the ultimate villain of the day. What else were the writers gonna do, bring back Tony Almeida or Charles Logan?

At the same time, President James Heller (William Devane) decides to remain in London until the Override is recovered. Mark is alarmed when he learns that Jack is leading the operation to take back the device and he pleads with the Russians to call off their men.

Cross To Bear

To save Cross, Chloe agrees to modify the Override device. Unfortunately for Chloe, Cheng’s tech guy quickly spots her attempt to plant a virus in the device and he stops her. Realizing that they may be about to die, Cross confesses to Chloe that her husband and child were killed in an accident, and not in a U.S. sanctioned hit as she had come to believe.

Although Chloe is angered by Cross’ dishonesty, she still tries to throw herself in front of him when Cheng finally moves to execute him. However, Chloe is too late and Cross is shot through the head.

Dosvedanya

Moments later, Jack and Kate find themselves under attack by Russian agents who take out their vehicle and break out the heavy weapons. Because of Jack’s precautions, the CIA support team is a few miles behind them as he and Kate fight for their lives.

Inside the former Open Cell hideout, Cheng’s tech guy successfully manages to trick a U.S. submarine crew into believing that they have been given orders to fire on a Chinese aircraft carrier.

World War III

The crew of the submarine are surprised by the orders, but they don’t question them or seek secondary confirmation. Instead, they fire two torpedoes and severely damage the Chinese aircraft carrier.

Since Cheng is no longer working for China, he seems to be eager for a war to escalate between his former country and the United States. And it looks like he may get his wish.

Do you think that Jack will be able to save Chloe? You know, there would be something fitting about Jack giving up his Presidential pardon to save Chloe since she essentially sacrificed her own freedom for Jack at the end of “24” Season 8. But we’ll soon see how it will all play out.
