Hercules: Watch the First Clip

Well, Renny Harlin’s Legend of Hercules sucked out loud in January, but Brett Ratner’s plain old fashioned Hercules is bound to be better, right? Right? Eh… maybe. MGM and Paramount (via MTV) have just released the first proper clip from Hercules, featuring Dwayne Johnson as the mythical demigod, and it’s… eh.

We mean yeah, it looks better than The Legend of Hercules. But a junior high school Jackson Pollock impersonator with access to only shade of brown could come up with something that looks better than The Legend of Hercules. The question shouldn’t be whether Hercules is better than The Legend of Hercules, but whether it’s flat out, genuinely good. This clip, which features Herc & Co. coming across a village of dead bodies that are not what they seem, doesn’t inspire much confidence. The production looks big and colorful, but the editing once the actual plot kicks in is choppy and ruins the build-up of suspense, and the grandeur, and the drama, and the badassness that we can only imagine they were going for. Since this is about Hercules and all.

But… we’re critics. What do you think? Does this remind you of glorious epics and badass action movies past? Does it make you really antsy to see Hercules when it hits theaters on July 25, 2014.
