BBC America Sets a Return Date For Luther

Earlier this year, Fox announced plans for an American remake of Luther, the British detective series featuring Idris Elba in the title role. And while that remake may still happen, Elba will be back for at least one more appearance as John Luther.

BBC America has announced that a new three-hour Luther special will debut on Thursday, December 17. When Luther Season 3 came to a close in 2013, the title character was at a crossroads with his former nemesis turned love interest, Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson). But when the Luther special picks up, John Luther will be on leave when “a shocking piece of news that draws him back to London in search of the truth.”

Game of Thrones actress and The Last Witch Hunter star Rose Leslie will appear as Detective Sergeant Emma Lane alongside Darren Boyd’s Detective Chief Inspector Theo Bloom as Luther’s colleagues who bring him back into the fold to investigate a serial killer who is apparently doubling as a cannibal.

Wilson’s Alice Morgan will appear in some capacity, alongside, Dermot Crowley, Laura Haddock, John Heffernan, Patrick Malahide, and Michael Smiley. Luther creator, Neil Ross wrote the new Luther special, and the director is Sam Miller, who previously collaborated with Elba in the thriller, No Good Deed.
